I would like to explore the idea of creating a color changing lotion, but I’m curious if there is a way to make these without using a HIP (high internal phase) emulsion or an encapsulated product? It does look rather stunning when a product transforms from white to bronze, but I’m not quite certain what the best approach to doing this would be. If you have worked with this kind of product in the past, I am sure the community would enjoy your input and shared experience (I certainly would). Are there any do’s and dont’s that I should be looking out for before formulating this type of product (for example do they require special equipment)?

If a HIP emulsion or encapsulated product are required, do you have a suggested product in mind?

Thank you for your advice and sharing your experience!

Avon has a patent or two on this - that’s the first place I’d start looking for info.

It’s funny, though. This kind of formula is the exact opposite of everything I was taught to do when I learned how to formulate liquid foundations. Back then, our goal was to get the color in the bottle a very close match to the color applied to the skin - and folks got quite upset if the color changed more than a little bit on final application.
