Body mist with insect repelling properties
I’m a current Pharmaceutical Science university student working on a formulation project to make a body mist with insect repelling properties. Currently, I’m looking at using DEET (n,n-diethyl-m-toluamide). However, DEET seems to be very poorly water-soluble, and I found experimental data claiming its solubility at 0.916g/L. The current formula I have been planning on using is (%w/w): (will add some extracts for hydrating/moisturising later on)
water (to 100%), glycerin (5%), polysorbate 20 (5%), fragrance (0.4%), mixed tocopherols (0.1%), phenoxyethanol (0.9%), pH adjusters
My question is: does anyone know how DEET will react in this solution, and what other ingredients could be added to ensure the stability of this mist? We are planning on a mist/spray and not anything with too much oil like a cream or lotion.
