Preservative Recommendation
Hello! I am seeking a safe preservative that doesn’t contain parabens, release formaldehyde, or have harmful side effects for an all-purpose cleaner formula that is mostly water but also has ethanol, plant-based surfactant, and essential oils. The pH is 7.5. I had considered sodium benzoate but our PH is too high. I considered Leucidal but it seems it isn’t regarded highly and is suspect in its preservation qualities. Any suggestions?

You could think about formulating and producing products that do not require preservatives. This was the stance I took with my factories (I owned two). We exported globally, and after 1-2 years were manufacturing and exporting globally. About 90% of our production was Private Label. And our products were being continually assessed by Cosmetics Compliance regulators globally. Our factories were GMP Certified.

Leucidal is useless - esp. in this context - and parabens and benzoate (but for one supplier) are not legal preservatives for household products in US. How much ethanol?
pH 7.5 is an odd condition for a household cleaner. Why is that your choice?

The easiest approach would be to (1) Lower you pH to below 6.0, and (2) Use Ethanol at 20% … it will dual-function as a preservative and as a semi-solubilizer for your essential oils
