  • Does this Shampoo need stabilizer to prevent silicone from creaming

I make several shampoos with SLES, CAPB, cationic guar, amodimethicone macro emulsion 0.35 micron particle size, nacl, preservative and water and haven’t noticed any instability in it.

I saw some patents which has said that silicones in Shampoo need a stabilizer to prevent their creaming to the top.

My question is: in a Shampoo formula like this, do i need to use a stabilizer to prevent creaming of silicones from Shampoo?

    In active

    SLES 10%

    CAPB 2%

    Cationic guar 0.2%

Amodimethicone macro emulsion o.35 μm or micro emulsion 0.1 μm at 0.25

    Nacl

    EDTA

    Preservative

    Water

    pH ~5

Since you’re not using a big amount of silicone emulsion, the issue might not be to visible. Usually, a higher amount of silicone is used in conditioning shampoos. In one formula I had, with around 3-4% of a silicone emulsion (50% active), I saw creaming after 1 month at 40°C, so I had to add Carbopol to stabilize it.

So you mean the issue is there but not very visible because i am using very small amount of silicone?

Can i ask what was the viscosity of that silicone and what was the particle size of emulsion?

I’ve never seen amodimethicone microemulsion (the CETAC one, I presume?) used in that application before @Abdullah The “classic” approach is straight up dimethicone, preferable a higher MW like 10,000 cst., which I’m betting is what @ketchito used. The classic stabilizer for this in a shampoo system is always sodium xylene sulfonate at a low level, like 0.20 - 0.50% solid state. The commercial stuff is 40% active. If this already works, then no need to fix it, although dimethicone costs less and works better.

The macro silicone emulsion i currently use has Amodimethicone (and) Cetrimonium Chloride (and) Trideceth-12. It has 30% 100k cps silicone and particle size is 0.35 μm.

The microemulsion i want to use is Amodimethicone (and) Trideceth-12. It has 25% 3k cps silicone and particle size is <0.1 μm.

I want to use this micro emulsion because it is clear and i thought it may be more stable maybe?

    Some more questions

    1. In emulsions to prevent creaming, we use water thickener like xanthan gum. Will it work here too?

    2. By what mechanism will Sodium xylene sulfonate stabilize such formula? hydrotrope?

    3. If as hydrotrope then according to this data, even CAPB is a better hydrotrope than Sodium xylene sulfonate. What are your thoughts on this?
