New cosmetic trends for 2023 and beyond
Hello friends!
Walking back home, a fruit seller was offering papayas free of carbides :# (true story). That’s when it hit me!…I decided to predict new trends for the cosmetic industry. Here are some proposals:
1) keep on taking chemical terms and turning them into something completely different (like what happened with “organic”):
- Ziegler-Natta (a new method to naturally harvest polymers in the lab)
- Chromatography (a new way of socioeconomic segmentation, without sounding offensive or snobish)
- Amphoteric (when you have mood swings)
- Aufbau (when you don’t remember your wife’s birthday and anniversary, and use some mnemotechnics to remember)2) all products should be coloured (inclusive)….because having white bulks is kinda racist.
3) I’ll stretch the “free of” claims to the limit whith these new additions:
- free of added acids
- free of added alkalis
- free of condensation products
- free of redox-reactions products
- free of aldehydes (because it doesn’t sound like a word)
- free of esters (because it sounds like a woman’s name)
- free of ketones (because it sounds like a kidney stone)
- free of alcohols (both the happy ones, and the boring ones)
- free of synthetic ingredients not made with passion
- free of lamellar phases
- free of HLB (that one I vote for!)You can jump in if you want. Hopefuly, these proposals would reach Mintel or Euromonitor so they hire me, and I can finally start making good money.

If any of these happen, you’ll get credit.
My predictions for 2023…
1. Mushroom / mushroom derived becomes the hot ingredients.
2. Silicones get reformed and are seen as good for hair - especially Amodimethicone
3. Cosmetic industry scandal - An independent lab will analyze expensive anti-aging products and discover they contain little to no “active” ingredients.
4. The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) will launch a beauty product line. (maybe hair treatment for the bald head)

@Abdullah - I just see it getting a lot of positive comments in consumer discussion boards. I don’t personally think it is better than Dimethicone.

Bet someone is struggling to get “equity” into their marketing.
To Perry’s - Cosmetic industry scandal - bet some clown lab will discover “gasp!!” heavy metals or some other trace terrible in something (ala lead in lipstick).
Consider the impact of the cosmetic modernization act in US. Stuffed into the 1.7 trillion, >4000 page omnibus budget act that just passed, it won’t drive a consumer trend but sure will have a lot of industry folks jumping.

@ketchito, nice thread! And merry, happy Christmas New Year back at you. How about taking that papaya with papain and starting an “Enzyme Revolution” in skin care? As for “free of”, I like “free of insects”. I’ve always wanted to add to a brand label copy “Do not use this product for evil.”

Polyglyceryl 4 laurate make spryable emulsion with even 0.3% xanthan gum.
It is also cold process.

My bets:
- The trend will be to follow the Ordinary trend because of inflation. So companies will try to make cheap one-two ingredient products
- Another trend will be charity. E.g. each cent from the cost goes to refugees. -
-Dermatologist will market the Product (as a Model).

Some other new (im)possible trends:
- viagra for the microbiome
- botox for the microbiome
- microbiome affectionate products
- anti Blue/Green/Magenta and Fucsia light filters -
Someone will introduce a line of cosmetic products specifically for use on gentials

Invisible product…????????????
The trend can be “Less(invisible) ingredients and More effective products”.

Inspire by invisible product trend, I expect new trend of waters. E.g. thermal water in the product, or infused water, or some other water, like ionized or whatever, which means nothing but makes fancy labels

Another one trend would be to sell not only products but formulas and ingredients to make them. The Ordinary did a step towards it by selling niacinamide and ascorbic acid powders. I suspect some brand will go even further - provide a formula and detailed instructions of how to make their already selling product and will sell you ingredients kit. This will be seasoned as “your product will be fresh” or “less plastic because you don’t buy it and reuse” etc
