  • Cetrimonium Chloride in Shampoo Formulation

    Dear all,

After few weeks trying to make my shampoo formulation into easy wet and dry combing, i did try Croda and even Cetiol, but the best in term of cost is just using 3% of Cetrimonium Chloride. But when i find out Cetrimonium is Cationic and not suggested to use with shampoo, but for hair conditioner.

So my question is it normal to make 3 in 1 shampoo and i put Cetrominium Chloride to be one of my formulation? That not funny to add Cationic into Anionic formulation ?

Please advice. Thank you so much

Not normal to use quat in shampoo due to incompatible charge effects with anionics. Better to use a cationic polymer such as cationic guar if you can source it.

Yeah, cetrimonium chloride is not useful in a shampoo, especially at such a high level. You might sometimes see it as a part of a blend of surfactants but it is not commonly included nor is it added for a conditioning effect in a shampoo.

2 in 1s are made using silicones as the conditioning ingredient.

3 in 1s are not really a thing (just a marketing story).

You can use something like Guar Hydroxypropyl Trimoniumchloride or a Polyquaternium (-7 for example). :) This will help condition your hair and won’t cause stability issues in presence of anionic surfactant.

Polyquaterniums and or guar derivatives would make better job for conditioning. this would be further strengthened with silicones addition.
