All shampoo surfactants remove oil from hair.
So you can only:
A. Co-wash as @ngarayeva001 suggested
B. Formulate a very mild shampoo that removes little oil from hair
C. Use a post-shampoo conditioner or hair treatment that restores oils. -
thanks for your suggestion
can you guide me more about co-wash -
Co-wash is a fancy word for washing hair with a conditioner instead of shampoo. It might work for very dry scalp and hair (I read it’s ok for 4B/4C hair types), but it’s not really washing.

I made an oil shampoo 2years ago you can try out. It’s a high foam shampoo that leaves hair clean and soft. Here’s the formulation;
Plantapon AF 56.4
Soybean Oil 21
CCT 15
Castor Oil 5
Herbal Extract 0.5
Hydrolyzed Protein 1
Sodium Benzoate 0.5
Antioxidant 0.1
Fragrance 0.5
Method of manufacture
- Add the following well;
- Plantapon AF, Soybean Oil, CCT, Castor Oil & Fragrance
- Pre mix the following until uniform
- Herbal extract, Hydrolysed Protein, Antioxidant & Sodium Benzoate
- Add to surfactant batch and mix well
High foam? I’m skeptical. How does the foam compare to a sulfate shampoo?
@Perry this is a sulfate shampoo. Plantapon® AF is a mixture of alkyl ether sulfate, citric acid ester of ethoxylated fatty alcohol and nonionic emulsifier. Read about it here https://www.ulprospector.com/documents/1312918.pdf?bs=804&b=91858&st=20&r=eu&ind=personalcare
I heard that there are materials that allow making high performance shampoo with huge amount of oils. It sounds very interesting but they are not sold at DIY size quantities (1lt).
@Nubian - I was asking about how the formula you posted compares to standard (non-oil containing) shampoos. When you said “high foaming”, I was wondering about that comparison. I’ve not found oil containing formulas to be high foaming relative to non-oil containing shampoos.

That sounds like a new category in the hair industry…you should pursue it more…oil shampoo is a great idea. I have very dry hair, but wash to clarify my scalp due to thinning hair. I hate how my hair feels after shampooing.
I am actually surprised it’s not available at DIY market because most homecrafters love the idea of mixing shampoo with oil. I see people posting formulas attempting to incorporate huge amounts of oil into a shampoo and asking why it separates probably once a week here. @Nubian, is it difficult to process/requires special equipment?
We saponify coconut oil to make a shampoo product. The amount of oil remaining can be controlled via the saponification reaction, or adding oil after saponification.
@ngarayeva001 at upwards of 50% in the formula though it would get used up quick right?
We actually had a sample on hand so I tried something similar:
Plantapon AF 55
CCT 14.5
Argan Oil 18
Rosemary EO 0.5
Castor Oil 11
Euxyl PE 9010 (Phenoxyethanol/ Ethylhexylglycerin) 1
There was foam but it was on the smaller side, a little creamy (sorry I am not very experienced with cleansers so my vocab is lacking). I attached a picture, not sure if that helps or what the proper method for foam testing is
I agree, it’s clearly doesn’t foam well. Could it differ depending on oils I wonder..
Yes, thanks very much for posting the photo. Unimpressive. I’d want a LOT more foam than that.
@ngarayeva001 it’s quite easy to prepare. I used an overhead stirrer with a paddle attachment.
@EVchem that’s the foam I got when tested washing my hands. The results are much different on curly hair or on a shower/bath luffa. Here’s an image of the foam.
