Questions about scent on hair products - Shelf Life
Hi Guys,
I would like to ask, for making hair styling clay cream products, will essential oil like Bergamot, Lavender oil etc affect the shelf life of the products and also the texture of it?
First time experimenting and would appreciate if experienced home brewer here are able to clear my doubts.

If you’re asking whether those ingredients work as preservatives…no they don’t.
If you’re asking whether they’ll affect how the product changes over time…yes. These ingredients will add some odor which will change over time.
No, they won’t change the texture over time, but they could affect the texture initially.
It really depends on what the rest of your formula is.

Natural substances like some essential oils degrade themselves rather quickly.
Oils with unsaturated carbon bonds seem to degrade faster.
You may need to add an antioxidant (although oxidation ain’t their only degradation reaction).Some fragrance oils lose scent after just a few months so some need recall old stock from shelves, add more oils and put back in the market (not as easy as it sounds).

Thanks for taking your time to reply to me.
Im actually asking if they will affect how the product changes over time.
In this case, may i ask, what kind of scent or fragrances can we add to to give our product the scent. Preferably organic, thus, i’m asking if we are able to use essential oil blend instead of synthetic fragrances. We are trying to formulate a product that is organic.
Hope you are able to shed some light regarding the above queries.

Thanks for reply. In this case, is there anyway for us to prolong to shelf life of the products to at least a year or 2. We are trying to use scent that is organic and natural into our formula.

Some essential oils can last for the shelf life you are describing but it will depend on your specific formula and the essential oils you choose.Unfortunately you are at the point where you will just have to make some batches with your preferred options and do some stability testing. -

I’ve had experience using essential oils in clay pomades before. Yes, the scent really fades after awhile, especially because of the clays. Clay will absorb essential oils over time. I actually stopped natural-shaming myself lol. I wanted EVERYTHING to be natural and organic, but I soon realized that it just didn’t make sense. Especially if you will be selling your product. There are many companies that use a combination of essential oils, fragrance oils and aroma chemicals. Personally I LOVE using aroma chemicals. It’s the same stuff perfumers use to make cologne. Look up perfumers apprentice online. They have lots of scents to choose from. I suggest you read about it first.
