  • Increasing the slip/glide in Deep Conditioner formulation

    Hello

I am quite new to formulating and have made few deep conditioners however they do not have the slip that I want for my hair ( I have African textured hair). I was wondering if anyone could provide some advice on how to increase the Slip in my conditioner formulation below:

    Water- 79.5 %
    Cetaryl Alcohol- 4%
    BTMS- 3%
    STEARAMIDOPROPYL DIMETHYLAMINE -3%
    Avocado Oil- 3%
    Broccoli Seed -3%
    D-pathanol- 1.5%
    Hydrolysed Wheat - 2%
    Preservative (PCG)- 1%

It may improve things if you neutralise/slightly acidify the stearamidopropyl dimethylamine. I suggest about 1% lactic acid.

Try 1% silicone dimethicone or D4 D5—-also low level of Hydroxyethylcellulse should help—your call!

Using dimethicone or dimethiconol mixtures, enhance the performance of your conditioner by giving slippery effect.

Try one of the Polyox powders, maybe Polyox WSR 201 at around 0.05-0.10% and see if gives a desired slip.

I’d reduce the oil levels and use Coconut Oil instead of the broccoli.  And your level of panthenol is too high as it won’t have any noticeable benefit on hair. The hydrolyzed wheat may increase the tackiness which decreases the slip you are looking for so you might want to reduce that too.

Of course, I would recommend you use silicones because you really can’t beat them for slip. Choosing to avoid silicones is choosing to make a product that doesn’t work as well.

    Hello JennyB,
I would suggest that if you like your formula’s ingredients then increase the BTMS50 and decrease the water by that same increase percentage.  I plan to use no less than 8% BTMS50 in my formula and I may test a batch with 10 to 12% BTMS 50.  Hope it goes well for you!
