    Hello all,

I am a” beginner-beginner,” but I have been researching, and studying as much as I can.
I would like to create my own conditioner with a few “chemicals”(not sure if this is the right word) like cetyl alcohol, beta carotene, and denatured alcohol. Everything else will be all natural herbs and oils. I know I have to use a preservative(not sure which kind either, maybe optiphen?) but my question is: With my level of experience(which is none) do you think it’s possible to produce a thick, creamy conditioner that I might be able to sell for profit. I read success stories of companies that are doing very well for themselves and they always say that they were making their products at home by themselves. If so, what equipment do I need, and what advice would you all give me  on how to do it myself. I do not have enough money at this time to hire/pay for a formulator.

If you want to learn how to create products at home check out swiftcraftmonkey’s blog.

Also I would recommend that you sign up for Perry’s cosmetic formulating course.

It is unlikely that with no experience that you will be able to create a product that you can sell for profit. The reason you read about these success stories is that they are rare.

It takes many hours and months of formulating and testing to create a successful product. With no experience you will not be aware of all of the testing and regulations that are required to sell a product. So I would highly advise against trying to sell products until you have a solid understanding of the chemistry, formulating, testing and regulations.

Please don’t be discouraged about learning to create products just don’t think that this is an easy way to get rich quick.

If you are just looking for a product to sell then find a private label contractor and have them make products for you to sell.

    Hope this helps

Another option is to download “A Complete Guide to Creating Hair Care Products” by Susan Barclay Nichols.

I agree with what ozgirl says, it does take time and experience to get a good recipe to perfection. Plus you do need proper facilities, and I doubt that conditioners (unlike bar soap) can be made at home in the absence of proper GMP facilities.

The advice you’ve been given so far is right on.

But if making products and selling them is what you are after you would be better off going to a contract manufacturer and working with them to develop the formula. If you want to be a chemist by all means take a course like ours (https://chemistscorner.com/members). But if you want to have your own cosmetic line, get someone else to make your products.
Also, you might find our free report on the subject helpful.  http://startacosmeticline.com
