As you said - chelator.  Would add EDTA to those options.
pH might drive greater levels of benzoate in nonsurfactant products but think the max are too much.

Phil, I used Phenoxhyetanol + Ehyhexylglycerin on my preservative system, yest I do add 0.4% of sodium benzoat on emulsion product, I do also use this preservative system on my water base product like toner. I have problem on using sodium benzoat on one of my formula because I use Vit E and C. what preservative is the best to boost the work of Phenoxhyetanol+ethyhexylglycerin?

I’ve seen a combination of Phenoxyethanol + Ethylhexylglycerin used with Potassium Sorbate in commercial ingredients as well, but unsure of the percentage used. Maybe you can explore that as well.

    Hi @PhilGeis

Thanks again for your input! What is the best way to incorporate the Sodium Benzoate? I have the solid form from lotioncrafters. Thanks in advance.

There are no controls per se - but you might compare a major product  at increasing dilution (100%, 50%, 30%) to get a feel for the test and generate differential data.
Shampoo probably since it will go into solution.

Thank you so much! I will update on how it goes.  :)

Have you been trained in aseptic technique?

    Hi there!

Yes, I have. I also learned about GMP from a program I completed at IPCS.

As a RN you no doubt studied biology, so this should be easy. Get hold of any USP, the method has not changed in decades, and look up USP<51> Antimicrobial Efficacy Testing it will give you stepwise instructions. That’s the easy part. Now you need to get a hood with HEPA filter, autoclave, pourplates, petri dishes, a designated refrigerator and of course the microbes themselves, which you order right out of the catalog. VWR Scientific has all of this stuff if your are in the USA.

    Hi Matt!

Thank you so much for this information as it is greatly appreciated. Yes, I am located in the US. I will check them out. I found the information below on the USP website. Would this be what you are referring to?

Use a blend of phenoxyethanol+ parabens or phenoxyethanol+ IPBC with a chelating agent.

These two blends are the mildest and strongest preservatives you can use if you don’t want to use formaldehyde releasers.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is IPBC? Thanks in advance.

@sciencebae92 You may also want to look at some starting Formulations from Vanderbilt Minerals. They have some Formulations with more readily available ingredients. For example, unless you find a repacker, the Ganex polymers have a 350-pound minimum order quantity.

Ok , great! Will do. Thank you again.  <3

What works best would be determined at the bench through empirical means. People underestimate the value of that process.

Completely understood. Thank you so much! I appreciate your feedback.

If you look at the market, most of these products contain a film former such as the Ganex line (Ashland) or even Polyperfluoromethylisopropyl Ether. Your product may deliver some moisturization, but without a film former (most likely synthetic) you will deliver little if any real barrier protection.

Hi there! @Microformulation I hope your day is going well. Thank you so much for your response. In terms of film formers, which would you recommend? I do have VP/VA Copolymer on hand. Thank you for your time.
