All of these “X Free” claims are so misleading. Saying “preservative free” implies that there is something wrong with having preservatives.  There isn’t.

I guess that depends on what the word “preservative” means. Maybe the Leucidal line is not an approved preservative in the EU so the supplier doesn’t consider it a preservative even if that’s what it is.

It sounds unethical to me. The only reason you would add leucidal is to work as a preservative.

Cocamide MEA is not typically used in conditioners.

But really, your question is too vague to give an answer.  Do you even have water in the formula? What about a preservative? Color? Fragrance? What viscosity are you looking to get? What is your benchmark product?

Without knowing what you want to make (conditioner is not specific enough) there isn’t much help to give.

For some of their products they are selling a live bacterial culture. This is their AO Mist product

But for their standard shampoo and body wash products, they are simply claiming that they enhance the results of the AO mist.  The shampoo is just a Glucoside / Betaine blend

Interesting concerns. I hadn’t thought of it.  I know when I was formulating around the time of the mad cow disease scare we avoided using any animal protein in our products. Since ingredients like proteins and “human growth hormones” are just claims ingredients with no measurable effect, it seems reasonable to avoid using them.

Sacrificing product safety to save a little money up front doesn’t seem like a good idea.

You don’t really need that much Panthenol. You should try the formula with and without. I bet you won’t notice a difference.

Yes. Typically they are.  However, the formulas you’ll find are starting formulas and shouldn’t be considered finished formulas. You’ll need to optimize them and maybe even change out different ingredients depending on what you have access to.  The suppliers make these formulas freely available so that they maximize the use of their own compounds.

    Great list of links.

I’m not sure I understand what your question is however.

You’ll find that in the cosmetic industry there are not a lot of compiled resources of data like the one you seem to be implying. This is because topics like preservatives are researched mainly by companies who are looking to use the information to create products (preservatives) to sell. They don’t readily share information that would be helpful to competitors.

The blend of Sodium C-14-16 Olefin Sulfonate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine can be thickened with salt.  No additional thickening agent is really required.

This list is from Canada and the US. I’m not sure about usage in South America. Sodium Benzoate is 12th on the list.

June 21, 2016 at 2:08 pm in reply to: Hair Grower

If there were a natural ingredient that could grow hair then everyone who has thinning hair would buy it. It just hasn’t been discovered.

Actually thickening hair is another difficult challenge. You would need to plump up the hair fiber (which can be done with water to some extent) then you would need a way to keep it plumped up. Unfortunately, keeping water in hair also weighs hair down so hair may be thicker but it will look flatter.

The strategy that is most often used to “thicken” hair is just to make it look thicker. This is done using styling polymers that can hold the hair in a more voluminous configuration.  The hair fibers are not actually thicker, it’s just that the hair style makes it look thicker.  A “naturally derived” ingredient might be something like this. https://sc.akzonobel.com/en/personalcare/Pages/product-detail.aspx?prodID=10421

What @Belassi said. Minoxidil is the only topical ingredient that has been demonstrated to grow hair (and this only works in a small amount of people).  It’s also a drug so you’ll have to follow the OTC rules when making it for sale in the US.

Otherwise, nothing has been proven to grow hair when topically applied.

Are you asking a question?  What do you mean when you say “it is a weak formula”?
