Sorry, I feel like I should phrase my above question better. I mean that, in a water phase, should the gum be thickened alone in the water before adding any other water soluble ingredients and mixing; or should all water soluble ingredients be dissolved first (in the water) before adding gum and thickening? Thanks again.

One follow up question, if I may. Should the gum be dispersed and thickened alone in the glycerin/water before adding any other ingredients?

MemberMay 29, 2019 at 10:00 pm in reply to: Does adding an oil to a surfactant cleanser formula increase or decrease irritation potential?Thank you @ngarayeva001 and @Perry for taking the time to comment and to clarify some information for me about so-called “oil cleansing.”
So basically, adding an oil to a surfactant system only serves to decrease the efficacy of the surfactant?
Then, does having an oil in the product add any benefit at all, for example: would the oil “leave” any kind of extra moisture on the skin after cleansing? Or is it generally just better to formulate a gentle surfactant cleanser and worry about moisturizing after cleansing? (Not that one wouldn’t also moisturize after cleansing, anyway.)
Thanks again for your time.

MemberMay 28, 2019 at 11:06 pm in reply to: Product Dupe Q: Are any of the ingredients in Vanicream Gentle Face Cleanser unnecessary?@MarkBroussard Do you know if the sodium hydroxide in the formula is used to adjust pH or is there another purpose?
I don’t have any issues with it, but was just wondering.

@Doreen, I agree I am very suspicious of the overtly fruity smell of the one seller. My other one was much like yours, with a more typical (I would say) ‘earthy’/‘nutty’ smell. I might have to investigate more with the seller who has that fruity one and see if there is something they aren’t telling me!

@noraf Did you check the pH of your final product? I’d be curious to know what you found, if you did.

@Microformulation Is Niacinamide really an irritant at 5%? I have only read that it is potentially irritating at higher percentages, such as 10%. Is there is some information I am not aware of? Also, isn’t it only Niacin (not Niacinamide) that causes skin flushing?

On the Reddit sub r/SkincareAddiction, there is a small group of people there who experience allergic-like reactions to aloe vera (burning, stinging, redness, even a rash). Sounds bizarre, as it is supposed to be such a soothing ingredient - but, could be a possibility that you are similarly “allergic”?
(These folks were using either raw aloe gel directly from the plant, or low-processed products [ex: aloe gels with very few added ingredients]).

Hi @ngarayeva001. Apologies for the obscenely late reply; for some reason I was not notified of your response to this post. Just wanted to thank you for commenting and for the information you shared. I appreciate it!

ngarayeva001 said:Is there any rule (such as higher/lower amount of linoleic acid) that can be used as a starting point when selecting oils for different skin types? I just have a feeling that suppliers’ recommendations are not supported by any researches. They even make claims like rosehip oil is a source of vitamin C, which is a complete nonsense because it’s water soluble.
The higher the linoleic acid, the “dryer” the oil will feel and it will sink in faster. The higher the oleic acid, the more “rich” the oil will feel and it will take longer to sink in.
Oils higher in linoleic acid are often the best tolerated oils for those with oily and/or acneic/acne-prone skin types.

I somewhat disagree about the Allantoin absolutely needing to be dissolved in Propanediol (not that it would hurt). I am able to dissolve 0.5% completely in warm water (I just dip my beaker in a water bath with the warm water below and formula inside of beaker) and stir until dissolved (approx. 30-60 seconds). No recrystallization, as I’m not heating it to a high temp and then rapidly cooling it.

Frustratingly, I don’t think I’ll be able to use the SK Influx as I’ve been patch tested at the dermatologist for different skin sensitivities (a major issue I have) and reacted badly to carbomer (which is part of the ingredients of SK Influx).
I realize it’s a very small amount of carbomer in the total product, and even smaller when you’re adding a minimal percentage such as 3% to a formula, but I’m not sure I feel comfortable putting it on my face given the reaction my skin experienced (bright red stinging + acne). Yikes!
