MemberFebruary 23, 2018 at 6:28 pm in reply to: Active material in liquid detergent@Chemist77 I was trying to understand through process how SA is so low ie 85%, Most if not all LAS is made via oleum or SO3 with conversions of alkyl benzene to sulphonic acid of 98-99% so most products marketed are 96% active with 2% free oil (as alkyl benzene).Supplier could be using a process I am not not familiar with (doubtful) or there is a mistake on Cof A/analysis.All of the foregoing relate to the source of the ABS.

Use a 96% active linear dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid and neutralize during formulation with NaOH

MemberFebruary 22, 2018 at 9:23 pm in reply to: Active material in liquid detergentYour real concentration expressed as sodium ABS is 10 x 0.85 + 1.8 = 10.3 kg/100kg which is 10.3%. Your sulphonic acid conc is low at 85%.As I recall even via Oleum should be >90% and via SO3 even higher unless your supplier is using chlorosulphonic acid.

We have evaluated both neat and in a cream base on 2-3 people:the VBE is as Bill Toge describes (and then some on female/s) whereas the new product is only slightly warming at equivalent concentrations.perhaps a blend may be best route to achieve desired sensorials.

MemberFebruary 22, 2018 at 4:14 pm in reply to: Active material in liquid detergentThe sulphonic acid as alkyl benzene sulfonate is neutalized with sodium hydroxide (or another base) in-situ while formulating into dishwashing products; so what you refer to as soda is sodium which is included in the active component ie sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate.

@Toge but hydroxypropyltrimonium guar is a quat???
QUAT is a vague generalization as many cationic polymers are not necessarily functionally equivalent to monomeric cationic surfactants such as BTMS. -

Cationic guar should definitely help with wet/dry combing and leave hair soft and smoothFilm which does not build up lays the cuticle down.

MemberFebruary 14, 2018 at 12:08 am in reply to: Best pH for skin and eye makeup cleanserYes finish at Ph 7 which will make it mild to both skin and eyes:add either or both of glycerin and/or Hydrolized oat protein. If sting persists, you are using too aggressive a surfactant system and if so add incremental amounts of polysorbate 20 or if you can get it Poe 80 sorbitan monolaurate.

MemberFebruary 13, 2018 at 12:10 am in reply to: NACL AND GLYCERIN IN WATER PHASEActually salt lowers cmc of SAA which lowers the interfacial Tension:Unfortunately it can also cause a catotrophic phase transition leading to eventual Oswald Ripening followed by coalesce and instability!

No either or both are pseudo plastic however mainly the HPMC.Personally we prefer Carbopol SF -1 for both viscosity/Rheology.

Sounds like you are trying to control foam in -process and if so add SLES sub-surface with very slow/minimal agitation.

MemberFebruary 1, 2018 at 4:16 pm in reply to: Is cold process and hot process soap live up to its skin benefits claim?Addition of stearic acid at 1-5% lowered bar Ph from 10-10.5 to 8-8.5.Does make a firmer/harder bar but you can raise water slightly (1-2%) to compensate if needed.Another way is to add 1% hydrolyzed oat protein to get perceived lather boost and skin feel Doing both may give you what you are looking for.although never added HOP to superfatted bar i have done it on regular 80/20 Tallow/coco and consumer tested on at least 500 subjects both in US and abroad with positive results in double blind crossovers.

MemberJanuary 31, 2018 at 10:34 pm in reply to: Is cold process and hot process soap live up to its skin benefits claim? The skin irritation from most any alkaline soap is due to the PH which overrides any oils butters/vitamins etc for skin benefits. You can blend for some mildness for example 80/20 Tallow/coconut is milder than 70/30 and/or you can reduce Ph by superfatting ie add 1-5% stearic acid to lower the PH. A rule of thumb -the higher the alkyl chain length the milder but the trade-off is you lose lather.
