This is a cationic product. I don’t think hard water will be an issue but you should use filtered water anyway and that is not so hard water.

In my experience EDTA increase the viscosity of BTMS a lot.

Ok I will try this out, thanks for the tip!

@CzarXavier If your issue is that your conditioner gets very thick, as @Abdullah mentioned, you could reduce the fatty alcohols. You can also reduce Behentrimonium chloride a bit, as long as it doesn’t impact your stability (perhaps drop from 1.0%  to 0.8%).

I’ve tried reducing the fatty alcohols, however, this results in a runny texture which I do not like. I will try reducing the behentrimonium though and see if that works. Also, I’ve reviewed the ingredient list of some lotions (including Cetaphil) and they usually contain Ceteareth-20 and/or Glyceryl Stearate. Do you think these would help in my formula?

Fragrance gets me every time. You need to play with different solubilizers and ratios. And then go back and rethink the viscosity. Also I solubilize everything separately first. Good luck!

Sounds like a good idea, will definitely try this out

@CzarXavier I suspect that either Guar and/or fragrance can cause the issue. If you want to use Guar in a clear product, you need to use the version for clear products, like N-Hance CCG 45. Also, your frgrance might not be colpletely soluble, and you might need a solubilizer. Do a knock out test removing either of those, to see which one is the one to blame.

Also, if that Phenoxyethanol is pure, you’re using way too much and you need to complement with another preservative to cover mold and yeast. And lastly, you are using way too much Glycerin (water soluble, will go down the drain and impair foam).

Thank you for the tips, I will definitely look into them!

Hello everyone, my name is Xavier and I’m from Mesa, Arizona. I got into making hair products for myself at the beginning of this year as I wanted to control what I put into my hair. I’ve fallen in love with this hobby and would like to get better at it so that I may be able to make great hair products for others.

I have silicones in the paired conditioner. Wouldn’t it be redundant to add silicones to the shampoo? If not, do I need any extra suspending agents or should I just be able to add it in after cool down?

No that wouldn’t work for me because I use aluminum bottles and it wouldn’t look very good. I appreciate the suggestion though, I will just use my old formula for now

I’ve seen it here and on target before, so perhaps not by the company itself but by retailers. I could’ve sworn I’ve seen Oribe post a similar notice under their ingredients list as well but I just checked and it’s not there anymore

I figured that was the case but also wanted to ask. Guess I’ll stick with my old formula for now

Okay I was actually thinking of dropping the guar myself so nice to hear another vote on that option. I will also increase the dimethicone as well. Do you know which grade/weight of dimethicone is best to use? Right now I’m using DM6 Dimethicone from Lotion Crafter, it doesn’t say what grade it is, just that it is low. Thanks for your feedback

The PH is around 5.7, I will lower both the shampoo and conditioner to see if that helps. I haven’t used it in a while, but Herbal Essence BioRenew Repairing Hair Mist helped with frizziness. I stopped using it when I began formulating my own products. Ideally I would like to create a shampoo and conditioner that works well enough where I don’t need a hair oil or leave in conditioner, but maybe it’s time to start formulating one of those as well. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Perry, thank you for your reply it is much appreciated. I do use a conditioner as well, I didn’t mention it because from my experience it hasn’t helped much. My conditioner formula is below:

    Phase A

    • Distilled Water - qs
    • Cationic Guar - 0.5%
    • Glycerin - 2.0%
    • DL-Panthenol - 0.1%
    • Tetrasodium EDTA - 0.2%

    Phase B

    • Yucca Root Oil - 0.1%
    • Coconut Oil - 0.5%
    • BTMS - 1.5% Active
    • BTAC - 1.6% Active
    • Cetearyl Alcohol - 4.5% (via BTMS)
    • Cetyl Alcohol - 1.5%

    Phase C

    • Dimethicone - 2.0%
    • Fragrance - 1.5%
    • Phenoxyethanol SA - 1.0%

On paper I feel my conditioner should be fine, so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any feedback would be appreciated!

I only plan to do this at home for 2-3 months, just want to be able to get some positive receptions first before committing to a contract manufacturer.
