Well there you go - you now have physical knowledge of how that combo turned out.
I don’t think your idea of oil and ps80 will be any good, my guess is the foam would be inadequate. -
Just try it and see.

Ah yes. Searching my name on Amazon books will find them. Currently working on a thriller set in the UK.

Absolutely! Let’s go back to Roman times. It will be great standing naked while a slave slathers olive oil all over me and then scrapes it off with a blunt knife.

I think I have some collagen sausage casings somewhere. I will have to try some experiments!

You didn’t even respond to my question.

Try Carbopol Ultrez-20 or Ultrez-21.

It is difficult to measure the actual pH of solid soap. If you lower the pH it will become less stable and at some point break down.

Calculate the HLB equivalence and use a blend of Polysorbate 20 and 80 accordingly. Or you could buy the special multigrade 20/80 Polysorbate. (No, I am just joking.)

MemberJanuary 31, 2019 at 5:34 am in reply to: Performance of MinaSolve™ Green B as Preservative in O/W Emulsions?Sodium benzoate and benzoic acid are pretty much the same thing. Sodium benzoate is ineffective at pH >=5.5. The pentylene glycol is a hurdle-type component, similar to caprylyl glycol, it’s biostatic and fungistatic which is not the same as biocidal and fungicidal. It would be advisable not to exceed pH=5 with this preservative.

Think about it. How many people here will have had experience with that particular blend? How do we even know what blend that is? It’s as if I were to ask a similar question:
“Hi guys, I am using a blend, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (and) Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (and) Lauramide DEA (and) Lauryl Glucoside (and) Ammonium Xylenesulfonate, and some CAPB, can you tell me if you think that 20% would be enough?”
Or I could have said,
“Hi guys, I have mixed 20% of Stepan APB with 10% of CAPB and it seems a bit too thin, what do you think?
I must ask you this: Have you tried it? If not, why not? What was the result? This is a trivial exercise in the lab. -
Just do it. That’s how we learn.

And your preservative system is?

You’ll need a standardised ladybird and a target bug.
You put the target bug (it’s not a real bug, just imitation) on one side of an open jar of the cream. Then you place the ladybird on the other side. Use your cellphone app “Bugviscometer” to video the progress of the ladybird to the target bug.
Sorry. I haven’t figured out a way of doing that yet. So I just guess. -

MemberJanuary 29, 2019 at 2:44 am in reply to: Most Effective Ecocert-Compliant Fungicidal Preservative?I can’t comment on that because I don’t use that variant of Spectrastat. The variant I have is caprylyl glycol and caprylhydroxamic acid and glycerine. Used at 0.7% I haven’t ever seen a shelf life failure. I think I have samples going back two years on this preservative, and it’s also been very tolerant of high levels of aloe vera and so forth. I can’t stand the MOQ though, so I am shifting to KEM NAT.

1. Calculate the HLB of the lipids combo.
2. Calculate the correct ratio of the two emulsifiers to get a similar HLB. You could also include a third emulsifer, say PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate or Tween-20.
3. Because this emulsifier combo soaps readily, you could include say 0.2% silicone, eg Polytrap 6500 to improve the sensorials and limit soaping.
4. Prepare sufficient of the pre-mixed emulsifier combo and bring it to 75C and mix well.
5. Bring the lipids and the water phase also, up to the same temperature.
6. Run all three in together while using high shear.
7. Allow to cool and add actives at <40C with stirring.Begin with say 7%:14% which is 1:2, and if you get separation, heat again and add more emulsifier and re-test, and so on. When you get a stable emulsion you can then add 0.2% xanthan gum as a stabiliser.

Just to be clear, my own opinion is that glucosides are OK in rinse-off products in reasonable concentrations. I can’t abide its use in a leave-on product though.

How much SSL and GS I need to use?
Has to be determined experimentally.
