Purpose of using Hexylene glycol in Neutragena is to solubilize Salicylic acid. It act as a solvent here. I do agree with Belassi, Glutamate VLT and DOE thickeners from Lubrozol are good options for this. I worked with Glutamate range, got good results. But, if product is over thicken, it would form lumpy gel. Its needed to keep flow able viscosity in case of Glutamate.

  • Silicone boosts SPF, get info from google. e.g. Cyclopentasiloxane and silicone elastomers.

First of all, do you want to develop o/w or w/o?. As given formula contains both which you mentioned in your comment. If you need o/w then, why are you using w/o type of emulsifiers? and vice versa. In w/o, all emulsifiers would be its type only. It may be due to Antaron i.e.VP/Hexadecane. Please share rest of the ingredients.

First of all coming to the basics in emulsions, It is a o/w type formula which can not inverse into w/o, if so, it will form same kind of emulsion which o/w forms. Generally, w/o type of emulsions are water proof kind which require w/o type of emulsifier which having HLB value from 3-6. For HLB understanding, please refer Google. Moreover, It cannot tolerate fat as it will create spreading problem. In case of w/o, mostly emollients are used and w/o type emulsifiers itself would give thickening to product.

Thanks Bob, yes turbidity is in 100% mineral oil and i am in a discussion with supplier but he is claiming that it is a purified grade which is supplying to most of the MNC’s and but the thing is that it happened at RH only not at dry stability oven (even at 55c-60c). I thought moisture entered in M.oil but it is enclosed in tightly fitted pet bottle. As i mentioned above, same turbidity is observed in most of the well known marketed brands (based on M.oil) which is still unsolved from their side too.

Generally, EDTA and sodium benzoate are not used for pH adjustment. Citric acid or lactic acid is used to decrease the pH from alkaline to acidic and sod.hydroxide or TEA is used to increase the pH from acidic to alkaline.

Must need preservative as mentioned ingredients are mostly natural and we don’t know about anti-microbial treatment has been done it by supplier or not. Generally, natural clay contains loads of microbes which should treated primarily by suppliers and then by us. Without water its not possible to apply such kind of products for which product needs to be protected.

You have to make fluffy, light cream for getting Fair N Lovely texture. 4% of Glycerine would make you cream heavier and i don’t understand the role of coconut oil here. It look like a shaving cream base (Soap). Also reveal pH of final product. I thing you may want to prepare vanishing base for which u have to do need knock out experiments. Mostly in vanishing cream, water separates out or it gets harden because of high solid contents and uncompleted saponification.

Lanolin alcohol forms a very rich and shiny cream and it stabilize emulsion also but the problem is that due to its own colour, it forms off white cream. For dry skin, you can try some emollients or silicone derivatives or else paraffins also work well.

See, its a good book but if you have older edition no need to buy newer one because it described basic knowledge and formulation for beginner. There would not be a much difference between both. It is a costly book.

There are lot of emulsifiers to deal but its use is depend on percentage of oil, application, product category and many more aspects. Explain more about your requirement like which kind of product do you want? application?

Antioxidants like Sodium sulfate & sodium metabisulphite can try and combination of Ascorbic acid with Hydroquinone is also a good option to try. In emulsion, acrylate copolymers work well with Hydroquinone to stop it’s oxidation but acrylates would not work here.

Soft or hard water contains Ca and Mg salts especially in Hard water which make hair dry and harsh. Even it affects on formulation, tendency of Ca and Mg ions to form inorganic metallic salt with other ingredients which tends to lead instability of respective product. Deionistion removes such inorganic salts or reduce it to tolerable level.

You may need good suspending agent because of higher percentage of ZnO. You can use micronised ZnO but it is very costly.
