When I measure pH of creams, I stick the pH electrode in the cream, even if the cream is thick, and move it gently. Is the pH measured this way reliable? Am I doing it right?
I read somewhere that in thick creams it is difficult for the ions to migrate to the electrodes and therefore the pH reading cannot be reliable. The suggested method was to dilute 10% of cream in distilled water. However, this confuses me because with addition of water, I think the pH will change and be different from the pH we want to measure (that of the cream). So what is the right way to measure pH in thick creams? Any thought?
Thank you!

@thebrain thank you for your reply. In your experience, does the Silverson work both as homogenizer (with high shear) and mixer (with controllable speed)?
Thank you in advance -
Hello all,I am considering buying a Silverson L5MA lab mixer, with included these workheads: (General Purpose Disintegrating Head, Square Hole High Shear Screen, Emulsor Screens and Axial Flow Head). As this is going to cost around 5500$, I was wondering instead if buying these 2 together (homogenizer and stirring overhead) would be an equivalent solution and worth it:1) Homogenizer:D500 Homogenizer Package. Includes DS-500/2 generator probe, for water in oil or oil in water emulsions, volumes 10- 50000ml and H-600 stand.2) Stirrer:OS20-S LED Digital Overhead StirrerI will work on 2L batches. I will mostly use Olivem 1000 as an emulsfierThank you for your advise!Annalisa

I was thinking of using Sal Acid around 1.5% not specifically against acne, but as a “purifying” ingredient, as it is supposed to act on the sebum in pores. But I guess then it would be better to use white willow extract, to not get in trouble with FDA?Thanks! -

I am very confused from the fact that salicylic acid is considered as an OTC drug from the FDA.
In this monograph I see Salicylic Acid over 2 up to 5%http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AboutFDA/CentersOffices/OfficeofMedicalProductsandTobacco/CDER/UCM135691.pdf
Does it mean that if I use for instance 1.5% SA, my product is not considered an OTC drug by FDA?
How can I legally use SA in a cosmetic, for instance face cream, without it being considered OTC drug?Thank you!

Thank you all for the info and your opinions!!
It helps a lot.In case you already have experience with their flavors, the small supplier I am talking about is Texas Natural Supply (I hope it is ok to write this…I am not affiliated nor have anything to do with them)
