  • Will adding essential oils to a perm solution affect its effectiveness?

    Hi all!

I’m a hairstylist currently enrolled in the cosmetic chemistry class here.

I’m doing a perm tonight on middle school girl and I don’t want her to go to school tomorrow smelling like perm.  I’m thinking of adding a few drops of tangerine essential oil to either the perm solution or the neutralizer or both to make it smell better.  I also have other essential oils as well as some synthetic fragrance oils if you think citrus is no good for this purpose.

My big question is, will adding a few drops of this essential (or fragrance) oil to the solution weaken the perm itself?  And if so, can you recommend the best way to get rid of that smell?

    Thanks in advance!!
    Steph

Hello - Thanks for the question.

Perms typically contain oils for hair conditioning and they contain fragrances so you’ll probably be ok adding a small amount of an essential oil to the mixture.  I’m not sure it will help with the smell but it’s unlikely to hurt the results of the perm.

Thank you!  I tried it (used a fragrance oil instead) and it worked great!
