  • Why does my formula separate?.

    Hello.
    I’m trying to formulate a hydro-alcoholic formulation. The only way it gets homogeneous/uniform is by increasing the steareth-20 but when increasing it and applyed to the skin, residues form when dried.
    should I add another solubilizer?

    ACH in 50%A.Q.:  30-40%
    Ethanol: 30-40%
    C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate: 6 -8%
    PPG-3 Myristyl ether: 5-7%
    Dimethicone fluid 5cSt: 3-4%
    Steareth-20: 2%
    Fragrance: 0.5-1.0%

    I’m not going to comment. I will leave it to someone with a more diplomatic way of responding.

    Well, if you remove the alcohol and leave chlorhexidine (assuming that’s what you mean by ACH) to the pros, then you’ll get a nice bodylotion which does what it’s supposed to do, sooth and care.
    @Belassi diplomatic enough? :smiley:

    Hello!. Thank you for your comments. ACH is Aluminum Chlorohydrate. I can’t remove alcohol because the non-volatile and volatile silicone emmolients will not dissolve. If I replace alcohol by water I will need more solubilizer (emulsifier) then.

    Okay, why didn’t you say before!
    So you’re making a deodorant… that puts it into a different light.
    Try a different emulsifier (yours isn’t made for alcoholic solutions). Better yet, remove alcohol and try a different emulsifier (obviously one for silicones, yours isn’t made for silicones either… but you know that already) or simply don’t add silicone oil (BTW, dimethicone isn’t volatile). Why exactly do you add silicone oil anyway?
    And yes, don’t use more solubiliser/emulsifier, you’ve got enough of both already in there (it’s basically just that with alcohol and enough aluminium chlorohydrate to etch holes into my armpits).
    Just as an example CLICK ME.
