  • Why alkylbenzene sulfonate isn’t used in person care?

    It’s in almost every other kind of cheap cleaning products that isn’t for personal grooming.
    From science sources (as sketchy or polarized as they may be), it isn’t more irritating than alkyl sulfate, or even a bit less.
    Also alkyl/alkamido amine oxides are in the same situation? - widely used in cheap detergent/dishwash, but rarely in personal care.
    Curious why?

    Alkyl benzene is a harsh material and for this reason it is not used in personal care products. SLS is not so harsh as fear marketer’s and some companies propagate against it .
    SLS is widely used in toothpastes, shampoos, shower gels , hand washes etc.
    pH of sulphonic acids is very low,  1.2 to 2.5 . So it is difficult to formulate skin friendly products with it .

    @zetein

    TEA-dodecylbenzenesulfonate is used by big companies like Procter & Gamble (Pantene and Head & Shoulders) and Unilever (Dove). Not as primary detergent though. Most likely it’s present as component of emulsions in which silicones are supplied.
