  • Why adding buffer to semi-permanent hair dyes?

I am formulating a semi-permanent hair dye and didn’t use any buffer. However, I think some benchmarks uses buffer in the ingredient lists.

Haven’t worked on these kinds of products, but my guess is maintaining certain pH range could be important for the dyes used and their stability.

If using the Arianors or acid semi-perms, then pH is a major consideration. Lactate buffers work best, but at the low use levels (<1.0%) there shouldn’t be much pH drift so you can usually do without.
