  • Which suspension/thickening agent should I use?

    Hi all,

I am a novice working on a liquid soap that needs to suspend pumice. I have bought the liquid soap already, and will be adding in pumice. I am wondering which suspension/thickening agent will work best with the ingredients of the soap (please see below). The grade of the pumice is not super fine, so each grain will have some weight.

Also, will I need to add preservatives to maintain shelf life? In addition to pumice I am adding in essential oil for scent.

Thank you in advance for your answers, I am looking forward to chatting with you!

Soap Ingredients: Water, Natural fatty alcohol
    C8–C16, Sodium Gluconate, Lauramine
Oxide, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Myristamine Oxide, Sodium Chloride, Methyl chloro Isothiazolinone,
    Methyl Isothiazolinone,
    Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate

    I’m confused.
You’re taking an already-made product and attempting to add (and suspend) pumice within it?

If you are buying a premade base you need to get a liquid suspension soap base. Or you can find one and check the list of ingredients for what they use to make it a suspension liquid soap. Just remember if you are buying any premade base and start adding ingredients it could change the integrity of the base. Always check to see what % of additives you may use. This is why buying a premade suspension liquid soap base may be a better choice as its already been formulated. Many bases allow you to incorporate anywhere from 2-5% in additives without changing it.

@candy52 Thank you for the insight and explanation. Hopefully since it’s just the pumice and suspension base, it will not alter the soap. I will definitely start slow to see how it affects the premade soap base. I’m just confused as to what type of suspension base I can use so that it is compatible with my ingredients (does it matter?). This is where I’m lost. I have reached out to manufacturers  to get my hands on Carbopol Aqua SF-1 polymer, but I’m not even sure if this is the correct suspension/thickening base to mix in.
