  • Which conditioning agent cope with xanthan gum

Posted by Fekher on October 26, 2022 at 10:02 pm

I’am thinking to make baby’s shampoo with those ingredients :
     CAPB
    COCOGLUCOSIDE
    PERFUME
    PRESERVATIVE
    WATER
    MPG
    XANTHAN GUM

Did this formulation need conditioning agent? Even no wich conditioning agent or in put you propose to improve my formulation?

Any reason why you’re not including anionic surfactant?
    Could you share %?

We don’t know if this “list of ingredients” would need a conditioning agent.
If it would, you won’t go wrong with, let’s say, Polyquaternium-7, Possibly Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride and maybe some superfatting agent (Ethoxylated lipid).

    Agree with @Paprik

Use an anionic surfactant and Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride.

Without anionic surfactant, removing of cationic polymer would be difficult.

@Abdullah @Paprik because listed ingredients are accessible however others not sure however what in put you can suggest for baby’s shampoo for the level

     CABB 16%
    Coco glucoside 4%
    Xanthan gum 0,5%
    MPG 4%
    Perfume
    Preservative
    Water Qsp

I will try this as start and depends on result may I will change the level of my T. A .

@Paprik but once you mentioned anionic and cationic react together to form insoluble content so is it appropriate to use anionic and cationic together in any formulation.

Do you mean SLES is not accessable?

    What is mpg?

Hi, but his formula does not contain any cationic surfactant (or at least strong enough to cause any troubles).
Or maybe I don’t understand your comment? What do you think does not add up? :)

@Abdullah  I believe MPG would be Mono Propylene Glycol.

@Paprik I supposed that MPG  is know ???? and yes it is monopropylen glycol then is it compatible using pq7 in presence of xanthan gum?
@Abdullah Sure we have SLES however I will not use it for baby’s shampoo. (accessible “mild” T. A)

@Fekher, we simply use PG I guess :D
It is compatible. However I do not use PG in surfactants systems as it tends to thin them. It should not be a problem with XG tho (I think).

You can create mild products using SLES.
But I get it, there are some milder and more tolerated surfactants/options, especially for baby products.

What is the function of mpg?

SLES: CAPB is less drying than CAPB alone or CAPB: APG.

L’oreal is using SLES in all baby shampoos. So it should be gentle enough.

@Abdullah mild is more general than less drying so I guess it is impossible to make free tear shampoo with only CAPB and SLES. About MPG it is for dissolving easier and faster xanthan gum then it is for reducing drying effect.

Instead of xanthan+ mpg, i suggest guar gum or HPMC.
They will not need mpg so cost less and less negative effect on foam and viscosity.

CAPB+ APG will remove too much lipids and babies skin produce much less lipids than adults. So drying is a big concern for mildness.
