  • What am I looking for in alcohol stable spray pumps?

Posted by Graillotion on November 27, 2024 at 12:38 am

I am in the early stages of developing a product with 20% ethanol. The low-grade pumps I am getting from Amazon for sampling purposes, are not getting through 2 ounce (56.7 gm) of product before failure.

What is the verbiage, or acronyms I will be looking for that will assure alcohol stable pumps, when it gets time to look for permanent packaging?

    Aloha.

Live in the USA…. if you have any vendor recommendations for 2 ounce spray bottles…. I’m all ears.

I’d like to preface this by saying: not a professional when it comes to spray pumps, but I’m knowledgeable about a similar technology.

I know you mention this contains 20% ethanol, but can you elaborate more on the formula? Is this some sort of hairspray or do you use any ‘sticky’ RMs (ie. Styling polymers)

I can say if this is a hairspray type of formula, there is a the chance that you can clog the actuator due to product (ie. Polymer) drying on the orifice. You can check this by removing the actuator and fitting a new one on, or washing the orifice with water (if your product can be dissolved water) and drying it.

Another thing to consider in regards to the actuator is the orifice size for the actuator – are you trying to get a fine mist? Using hairspray again as an example, if the formula is higher viscosity or if there are any undissolved components, this can clog it again (ie, why hairspray bulks are usually filtered). If you have a larger orifice it may be more forgiving, but if you wanted a specific spray pattern this can limit it.

If it is not the actuator, then I think it can be the gasket? Gaskets will swell according to the solvents used (ie. Alcohol, water, etc) and if the wrong gasket is used then it can swell too much or crack, and would not be compatible. I don’t know all the gasket materials available but depending on the composition of the formula you may need to check if the correct gasket material is being used.

The only other component that I can consider would be the spring, if there’s any chance it can be corroded? But that would largely in part be due to your formula.

I don’t know too many suppliers, but you may be able to check Berlin packaging? I do see they have some packaging specs and drawings on some of their listings which may aid in your search.

Check out McKernan [www.mckernan.com] and use a PET cylinder or Boston round for the primary bottle, for a closure use a PP with SS ball/HDPE stem Euromist sprayer would be my recommendation, bottle and closure 20/410 or 20/415 neck finish if 2.0 fl.oz. (60ml) is your jam. Euromists have very small orifice size - why they mist so darn well, right? As for clogging, just add a little alkanolamide to the formula and keep suspended solids out.

Thank You Matt! Look forward to hearing you tomorrow in the Q & A …. if my alarm can wake me in the middle of the Hawaiian night! I have a SPDMA question all spooled up for you…. if Perry doesn’t discriminate too hard against those that took the time and prepared questions in advance. 😂
