Water Based Pomade
Posted by Rebelgreaser66 on May 27, 2017 at 1:40 amHey guys what’s up?
I have a question about some ingredients for a water based pomade formulation
Which substances could replace PEG-7 and benzyl alcohol in the formulation?
Thanks

With the sparse information offered it is impossible to give a meaningful response. What other components are present? The amounts?
-
Water 57% Propylene glicol 3% Polysorbate 20 2%
Glycerin 1,5%
PEG 40 0,8
Polysorbate 80 1,2%
Almond Oil 0,8%
Pvp k30 3,3%
Ceteareth 20 23%
Simethicone 1% -
What determines the hardness in the formulation of the pomade? Maybe the amounts of beeswax?
-
In the formulation you have given there is no PEG-7 nor benzyl alcohol.
Following your later post, I don’t see any beeswax.
The percentage formula totals 93.6. What other components are there?
-
What are you trying here, clear or normal with lipo components.
-
The remaining percentage is the amounts of Benzyl Alcohol and PEG 7 ( 2,5% and 4,9%)
About beeswax , in the formulation isn’t included but i’ll wanna know its influence if i’ll would decide using it in the formulation
Chemist77 is clear
Thanks so much

If you search this forum you will find the exact information you are looking for including the formulations. That’s why it’s always better to search the forum before posting the query.
-
What is the origin of the formulation you are quoting?
Benzyl alcohol at that level seems excessive.
Is it PEG 7 you are referring to or a derivative like Peg-7-glyceryl cocoate? Similarly with PEG 40 - is it that or a derivative such as PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil? Both of these are profoundly different in their effect.
Beeswax will most likely have a negative influence of the product.
-
The wording of the query says thousand words and so I suggested to search this forum. I remember posting the procedure and formula, he/she can let go of other things asked.

Johnb, yes, PEG-7 is peg-7-glyceryl cocoate and PEG-40 is PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oilThe origin of the formulation is an attempt at replication of “suavecito” hair pomade. The Formulation is not mine, i saw it of a project of a college partnerSo, Again:
Which substances could replace PEG-7 and benzyl alcohol in the formulation? What other component could be influence the effect over hair hardness? (soft pomade, medium pomade, hard pomade)Thanks
-
Sorry for my poor english i’m from argentina
I meant, What other component could be influence the ‘hold’ of the pomade?
-
peg-7-glyceryl cocoate - there is no real substitute for this material. If you are unable to obtain it, a near equivalent is PEG-6 caprylic/capric glycerides (Softigen 767) but, if you are having problems obtaining the first material, you are likely to have similar problems with the second.
Benzyl alcohol is present as an antimicrobial preservative. There are lots of materials which could replace it.
PVP K30 is the material that provides the “hold” in a pomade.

thanks so much @johnb
and the last one pleasecould be replace the peg-7-glyceryl cocoate for the PEG-100 Stearate?
it’d have same effect or similar over the formulation? -
These are pretty simple questions which show that you need to do a great deal more research before tackling this project. Those two products above aren’t even close. It seems at this point you are throwing things at the wall and hoping they stick, so to speak. You need to start looking at the fundamentals of these materials.

I would look into one of Perry’s courses. The biggest lie in the Cosmetic Field right now is the “I can google this and it looks simple, I don’t need to be a Chemist.” Almost every other technical field you would not take this attitude. Cosmetic Chemistry is not any different. It is a fool’s belief to overly simplify it.

For example, when suggesting alternatives to a PEG ingredient you will suggest another but much different PEG. Not all PEG’s have the same function. Have you also considered PEG Bundy?
-
I study chemistry and i like the topic of cosmetical chemistry but this in my country is a pharmaceutical chemistry student businessFor this reason I ask the above questions and not make a wrong formulation“Have you also considered PEG Bundy?” Hey dude, maybe your mom could works better. How rude!
