How can one determine, WITHOUT access to a laboratory, if the L-ascorbic acid powder one has is still good, i.e. would STILL inhibit oxidation?

I have some that I purchased in May of 2013. It’s been in its original plastic  bag, which I put into a jar,  then into an old brown sock, then into a paper bag, stored  in our dry basement. SO it’s been kept dry & in the dark. And yes, the sock is clean, not stinky.
I put some of the powder into water in a clear jar. It’s been on a window sill since Monday. It still looks clear to me.  I thought it would darken as it broke down  reacting with oxygen.
