  • Using salt to thicken olefin sulfonate and SCI Shampoo

    Hello

I am wondering if I can get any help with thickening this formula. What’s the maximum amount of salt I can add to help thickening? At 1% its only slightly thicker than water. I have tried adding the salt at the beginning and also at the end and the result is pretty much the same. PEG 150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate thickens it just fine but is difficult to find where I live. I would appreciate any help.

    Thank you!

    1 Water 76.5%
    2 EDTA 0.1%
    3 Citric acid 0.1%
    4 NaCl 1%
    5 Sodium Cocoyl Isothionate powder (82%ASM) 6%
    6 Sodium (C14-16) olefin sulfonate powder (88%ASM) 7%
    7 Cocamidopropyl betain (30%ASM) 8.5%
    8 Glycerine 1%
    9 PE9010 0.8%

    Method

    A. Add 1-4 and heat to 75c
    B. Make paste with 5-7 with heat
    C. Mix A and B until solution is clear
    D. Mix 8 and 9 together, and then add to main batch.

I make a shampoo with the same surfactants. it’s a very nice combo. Salt is not going to help you here, you will have to use a thickener of some kind, as you have found out. Where do you live?

Take out salt, use Acrylates Polymer/Cellulose/Gum or any other polymeric thickener

@ccchem PEG 150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate is part of Crothix Liquid, which can be easily found. You could also try with Versathix or Genapol LT. Also, you can avoid polymers and add Cocamide DEA (or MIPA or MEA), and increase your Betaine. You’ll have a better salt response.

Thanks for sharing this. I was hoping for a cheaper option than crothix and polymers. I will definitely give the Cocamide DEA a try.
I am doing a few more experiments and will be back with feedback. Thank you!

Thanks for this suggestion. Unfortunately, these are a bit difficult to find for me due to the hefty courier and import charges!
