    Hi!

    New here, having some issues using Cationic Guar in my shampoo. Love the conditioning feeling of the guar and the thickness it adds to the solution, however the gum starts to settle to the bottom of the bottle after just a few days leaving a thin layer on top :/.

    Here’s my ingredient list:

    water, coco betaine, coco glucoside, glycerin, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Sodium PCA, Glucose Sorb (Sorbeth-230 tetraoleate, decyl glucoside, sorbitan laurate) , Provitamin B5 (d-panthenol), Optiphen, Essential Oil Blend, Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Cationic Guar Gum, Aloe Vera Powder, Saccharide Isomerate

    Currently i have the Cationic guar at .5%
    argan oil is at .5% and jojoba is at .5% essential oil blend is at .75% using the PEG 7 to help keep these together.

    Not sure if the guar is not hydrating properly or if I have an ingredient that is getting in the way of it fully mixing.

    Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks!

    What specific Tradename Cationic Guar are you using? … Some require a specific pH adjustment to hydrate properly.

    Hi,
    You have to neutralize Guar with Citric acid and then it will stable and give better efficacy.

    Since you purchased it from Makingcosmetics.com there is no way to know exactly which Tradename Guar you are using … they could be re-packing any grade of Guar from any manufacturer, but they do indicate that you need to reduce the pH to process it is @Vjay noted above.

    @vjay @MarkBroussard

    So in my process I’m adding water, glycerin and the guar gum in the beginning, turn mixer on and leave it for ~45 minutes. Then I proceed to adding the rest of the formula, at the very end I adjust the citric acid.

    Are you suggesting I add the citric in the begging with the water, glycerin and guar?

    Yes, correct.  You need to reduce the pH at the beginning of the process for the Guar to hydrate properly.  I would take the pH down to 5.5 or so by adding the citric at the beginning of the process then stir for 45 min to give the Guar time to hydrate properly

    @MarkBroussard @vjay

    I hydrated the guar for 45mins to 1 hr at PH4.5 then went on to add the rest of the ingredients..

    at first the solution looks great. 6-8 hrs in the gum starts to separate and settle to the bottom of the bottle…

    Are there any ingredients listed above that raises a red flag? something that could potentially be causing this?

    Yes you need to neutralise first which i am following

    You need to do experiments like one by one remove ingredients and do trials, then only you come to know which ingredients are a culprit. Or maybe your quality of guar is not good
