  • Thoughts on SACCHARIDE ISOMERATE? Worth it??

How does it perform compared to other humectants?

My current go tos are Glycerin, Sodium Lactate and Propanediol. I also use Silk Amino Acids/Peptides.

Just curious how it compares to those.

I also want to try Sorbitol.

    Any thoughts welcome!

I find it too sticky and it grabs onto the skin too much which means the stickiness/tackiness lasts through washes. It makes me just want to wash my skin immediately. It’s not the miracle humectant I was hoping for anyway!

There is a recent humectant thread here https://chemistscorner.com/cosmeticsciencetalk/discussion/7838/lets-compare-humectants#latest

I haven’t found any humectant I like the afterfeel more of than glycerin. Everything is either sticky to me (like having spilt a sugary drink on the skin) or the hydration is too short lived vs glycerin. (I haven’t been using propylene glycol, propanediol or butylene glycol though which are probably nice feeling alternatives).

Thank you SO much for sharing your thoughts on Saccharide Isomerate. It’s not exactly inexpensive so I’ll pass for now.

So far my favorites are Propanediol and Sodium Lactate. Both are non sticky, especially Propanediol. Actually Propanediol has an almost emollient feel. And I find it extremely effective as a humectant.

I’m also a fan of Amino Acid blends, such as the one sold by Formulator Sample Shop.

I’m buying some Hyaluronic Acid right now. Going to make a 1% solution. I’ve found that in prepared products, Hyaluronic Acid is way too sticky for me. So I’m going to try it alongside some ingredients known to detackify - Propanediol and dimethicone, and use it in small concentrations.

I’m also trying Honeyquat and hydrolyzed proteins to see how they compare.

I find Saccharide Isomerate to be on the tacky side as well. Though i’m not really a fan of how oily Propanediol feels.

Hyaluronic Acid should do well if used at a lower percentage like 0.5% or less, which it isn’t really tacky in the first place? I’m more annoyed at how it film forms at a higher percentage.

Not really a fan of Honeyquat as well since the one i received smell fishy since it’s cationic.

If you are using the Amino Acid blends, then you might not need to try the hydrolyzed proteins, though you can try to see which you prefer.
