Thixotropy behaviour
Posted by ssdc on January 7, 2016 at 4:09 amHie all,
I am thinking of making a lotion that has thixotropy behavior. Can anyone of you suggest some examples of ingredients that gives this behavior to a formulation?thank youMicroformulation replied 8 years, 2 months ago 8 Members · 14 Replies -

Polyvinyl Alcohol is a polymer and behenyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol, so no. You can try probably Sodium polyacrylate and see if it helps.

First, the formula has thixotropy, but it exhibits thixotropic behavior. (I know, English is weird). There are a number of thickeners that will produce shear-thinning behavior. Are you only looking for polymers? Why do you need this and/or what does the thixotropy need to accomplish? Lastly, does it need to be reversible (thixotrophy) or can it be shear-thinning on skin with no reversal?

@bobzchemist I have difficulties achieving my SPF for formulations with low viscosity. Therefore I thought of adding and ingredient with thixotropy behaviour in order to achieve the SPF but at the same time exhibits easy spreading and nice feel.
It can be shear-thinning with no reversal. -
Tixogel RCM 1357 from Eckart America if you don’t mind using Silicones.

I will try formulating with these ingredients
thanks for the input -
I’m manufacturing a pigment suspension that contains TiO2 and pearl dust, CMCNa at 0,5% exhibit a very good tixotrophyc behabior , and is human skin compatible. good luck

SSDC, sounds like you need high yield for stability and suspension. Not sure which UV filters you are using but you could try bentone gels (oil phase), aristoflex velvet (water phase).

You need to talk to the folks at finishing.com. We don’t deal with paint at all.
