  • Thickness of liquid Hand wash does not sustain

    I am
formulating a herbal hand wash with following ingredients

    1)     Aloe vera extract : 240 ml

    2)     Decyl Glucoside : 60 ml

    3)     Guar Gum : 10 gm

    4)     Glycerine : 7.5 ml

    5)     Fragrance : 20 drops

    My motto is
to keep number of ingredients to minimum. I have following questions / problems.
Shall be thankful to have answers to the same.

    1)     The combination is perfectly thick
when fresh. But as the time passes, (10 to 12 days) it stats thinning or
separating. Shaking helps but that is not the expected solution.

    2)     pH of my final formula is in the
range of 4.5 to 5. I think this is in tune with the pH of human skin. Am I
right? & is this approach scientific?

    3)     I am making general purpose hand
wash. Should every soap formulation be antimicrobial as well?

Make sure you are using a Cosmetic Grade Guar Gum or Cationic Guar Gum as regular guar gum is susceptible to microbial attack and hence the loss of viscosity. Would also be a good idea to use a biocide.

If you want to take a scientific, minimalist approach to formulating, you start with the functional ingredient and build from there. That is the decyl glucoside. Don’t use aloe vera extract when deionized water will work.  Aloe extract provides no benefit.  Similarly, don’t add glycerine since it just gets washed away.  And add a preservative.

Have you hydrated the Guar gum properly? What are your methods in doing so? Then I can help you.
