Xanthan gum is stable in alkaline systems.

Also most clay thickeners such as Laponite, Veegum and hectorite/bentonite.

Best bet is xanthan in up to 10% NaOH solution.. Sclerotium gum is another and very stable viscosity at high PH.Can be used with xanthan for maximum viscosity stability.

I always see a cost problem with using sclerotium gum in a product like this but they are synergistic so it could be worth investigating.

I have had much better results with Solagum AX (INCI Name: Acacia Senegal Gum (and) Xanthan Gum) than with Xanthan gum alone or even with Sclerotium gum. It is also easier to get solubilized.

You can also try amaze xt - dehdroxy manthan gum which will give good flow

Hello all, I am trying to develop a hand sanitizer using 70:30 :: isopropanol: water and need to increase its viscosity. Will car bomber 940 can help to make it viscous, if so what can be procedure. Kindly suggest any easily available gelling/ thickening agent that can privide viscosity to this high alcohol based sanitizer.

Virashkgupta your should start a new thread for your enquiry to be able to get the best responses.

Carbopol 940 will thicken the mixture to a gel but to maintain free flowing properties you would be better using 941 type.

Are you sure this is a feasible concept? Most of the world has too many of these sanitizer products and the marketplace is very difficult to enter successfully.

I’m very fond of “car bomber 940” but I think the NSA might have issues with calling it that. “Carbomer” is the correct generic name.

I’m very familiar with the term “car bomber” as that used to be the name used by the manufacturing operatives at one place I worked.

There were lots of other “misnomers” most of which I can’t recall but on theat does stick in my mind is ace top hen one - which is, if you remove the spaces, acetophenone.

my favourite misnomers are ‘gingsing’, ‘methly paraben’, ‘proply paraben’ and ‘Cosmic Red’ (as opposed to Cosmetic Red), which all came from one former QC lab technician; he was intelligent and good at his job, but his spelling was atrocious

Sir i want to know. What is the difference between Carbomer 940 and 980?

Carbomer 980 is manufactured in a relatively harmless (low toxicity) solvent system than the 940 grade.

Carbomer 940 originally used benzene as a reaction medium but this was changed many, many years ago to less toxic but still aromatic solvent system.

The residual solvent in either grade is extremely low and unlikely to cause any problems.
