  • Theory behind Cleansing Foam?

Hi, I would like to learn how to formulate soap based cleansing foam. However, there is very limited information on this online. I heard that it is complicated and SAP value calculation is needed. Therefore I would like to ask from you how to calculate the SAP value of the cleansing foam? Is it the same method as we make soap bar?
Below is the draft of my first try in lab but it ended up no cleansing effect and no bubble was formed. I couldn’t figure out where went wrong for the formulation. Therefore, i would like to ask a favour from you.

    Phase A
    water
    EDTA
    Natrosol 250 HHR CS   0.8

    Phase B
    Myristic acid   6.00%
    Karite Butter   3.00%
    Stearic acid     5.00%
    Cetyl Alcohol   5.00%

    Phase C
NaOH              0.4 (just to make the finished product in the pH5-7 without calculating SAP Value)

    Phase D
    Preservative

In addition,I would like to ask what is the pH range for cleansing foam? Is it different from other skin care product, which is pH 5-7?

Thank you in advance for your help!

It’s a soap, so you should use the same calculations that you would use for a solid soap bar. You won’t be able to get pH that low and also, including cetyl alcohol in it will produce a waxy appearance, probably.

Natrasol will flatten the lather so you may need another thickener but follow Bellasi also and make K soaps first.

Thank you for your explanation, @Belassi @DRBOB@VERDIENT.BIZ

May I know the procedure then? Is that mean that I first need to make a solid soap then only I add in water phase?  Regarding the pH, is that mean that I just need to calculate the SAP value and add in NaOH without considering the final pH?

Thank you in advance for answering my doubt. Appreciate~

You can use the soapcalc.net site to automatically calculate the required amounts. For liquid soap use potassium hydroxide. The alternative approach would be to go synthetic.

    @Belassi
thank you for your explanation. I will try again in lab. Thank you
