Greetings to all the members of this prestigious forum.

My query is regarding the emulsifier. We have been using Eumulgin HRE 40 of BASF Corp. in our fabric softener and disinfectant formulation. As far as I know, a fabric softener composition includes a conditioning agent, an emulsifying agent and agents for improving aesthetics of the product like colour and fragrance. We are facing an issue right now. The Eumulgin HRE 40 we are using has lost its homogeneity and viscosity and has become watery. Its availability in our region is difficult. We are looking for a better substitute of or alternative to Eumulgin HRE 40 with similar emulsifying efficiency.

What could be the reason behind the Chemical losing its homogeneity and viscosity drastically ???

Eumulgin HRE 40 (PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil) from BASF has a shelf-life of 24 months and they suggest it be homogenized before using if you don’t plan on using the whole thing because separation may occur during storage. They suggest heating to 30C and stirring. They also mention it be protected from moisture as it is hygroscopic.

What temperature are you storing the product at. The melting point of PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is around 30 C.

The storage temperature varies. In summer the temperatures easily reach 40 degrees Celsius.
