  • Sticky and Oily Clay Blush

    Hello. I got helpful comments from this site since I became a member and making my own cream blushes. Ingredients are kaolin clay-30grams, grapeseed oil- 34ml, shea butter-1 tsp or 5 grams, beeswax-1.5 gms,  iron oxide-1.2 grams, titanium dioxide-1.2 grams, glycerin (1%), Vit. E (1%), phenoxyethanol (0.03%).

    I was wondering why my mixture gets sticky and oil seems to separate or ‘escape’ from the cream when not used and stored for a month? Does it have something to do with my mixing or ingredients? I use a hand spatula for mixing at the moment.

    I am also using from the same batch for everyday use but it does not look like this. I am sure that my equipment are clean when making creams.

    Suggestions to omit or correct my formula is encouraging. Thank you.

    That glycerin is going to require an emulsifier. Or drop that and your otherwise-anhydrous formula should be fine.

    Glycerine is water soluble. Also try to use less sticky butter like mango butter.

    @tinj, good cream blush is made in a similar way to a lipstick. You don’t need clay and glycerin in it.

    @Milly: yes, already omitted glycerin. I don’t have mango butter for now but do you have any idea if cocoa butter will behave well in this mixture? Thank you.

    @ngarayeva001: I did make another batch minus the glycerin and clay. It looks like lip balm. As you said, yeah more like lipstick 🙂 But I noticed that I couldn’t play much with the colors that I wanted to create compared with clay in it. Although I haven’t tried replacing clay with titanium dioxide. I don’t usually exceed by 5% of of it in my formula.

    There are other fillers, such as sericite mica and talc that you can use instead of clay. TiO2 will make the product too light.

    Drop the glycerine, drop all the natural butters and replace them with cetyl alcohol for better slip. Replace beeswax with Candelilla wax or increase the cetyl alcohol for better glide but be mindful that Candelilla is a harder balm so use lesser amount. Keep the kaolin. Use pre blended iron oxide colorants. Everything should blend without a help of stick blender. Add dimithicone for silkier feel. To extend shelf life you can add a little vit e. The finish product should look like a proper stick blush or deo stick and not a soft lotion consistency.

    @ngarayeva001: tnx!
    @Milly: I haven’t tried using cetyl alcohol and dimethicone but I am convinced to re-formulate. So much help coming from you. Big thanks!
