Should we increase the conditioner in this Shampoo?
If we increase the total active surfactant SLES, CAPB,c DEA from %10 to %20 in a Shampoo, should we double the amount of cationic guar from %0.2 to %0.4 too to have the same conditioning effect?
Because consumer will use less amount of %20 AS Shampoo to have same foam as %10 AS. -

Hi,
You dont really need to increase guar, but again it depends on the claims you are making. since your are doubling the surfactants, you are making it more clarifying and increasing the viscosity. Adding more guar going to increase the viscosity even more. Always change one factor at time, increase the surfactants in one batch and then second batch with both increased surfactants and guar. That’s one of those things you would just have to try. I doubt you need to double the amount of guar though. It works via a dilution/deposition mechanism and going from 10 to 20% surfactant shouldn’t have much effect on that.

@Abdullah - it’s the way in which cationic polymers are left behind on the hair. The theory is this. Cationic polymers are made soluble in surfactant solutions that are concentrated (as in a shampoo). When the product is in use, it is diluted with water. That reduces the solution to the level at which the cationic polymer is no longer soluble. For this reason, it plates out onto the hair and is not washed away.
For conditioning agents to work, they have to be left behind on the hair. That’s why oils in shampoos don’t make good conditioning agents. If the shampoo is working, any oil should be washed away.
