Shampoo surfactants
So lately I have been seeing glucosides been referred to as an irritant. I also read an article about it. And I have formulated with it but customers have never complained about it. That been said, I want to change my formula because am rebranding my products , and I am using SCI as my major surfactant ( bcos of its mildness on dry African kinky hair) would it also be okay to use decyl and capryl glucosides as co surfactants? Since it’s a rinse off product…? And what % do you think would be safe?

Yes, you certainly could pair SCI with one of the Glucosides as co-surfactants. The glucosides are safe, but do cause irritancy in 1% of the total population. Since so much focus was placed on Decyl Glucoside as “Allergen Of The Year” a couple years back, you might want to use Coco-Glucoside instead. How much Coco-Glucoside to use all depends on how much SCI you are using and the desired viscosity of your end produt … the glucosides are notoriously difficult to thicken. But, something in the 5% to 10% range should be fine.

I have 2C hair type (which are also chemically treated and severely damaged) and glucosides make rat nest in my hair. Can’t even imagine applying them to kinky hair. Have you tried Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate or Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate. These work nice as primary surfactants with SCI as a co-surfactant.

No I haven’t used them though I have heard a lot about sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate. Will look out for them . Thank you so much for your contribution and time. I really appreciate.

It’s quite mild and surprisingly cheap (at least in the UK). Have a look at OGX shampoos. Mostly olefin sulfonate, SCI and CAPB
