    Hi All,
i am new here, I think this is a great site and look forward to being a part of a great community.
i am having an issue with a sulfate free shampoo formulation separating after a few weeks and sometimes a few months

    I would appreciate any advise.

    cold process

    guar gum- 0.3%
    sodium Lauroyl sarcosinate -8%
    lauryl glycoside -7%
    cocamidopropyl Betaine -12%
    polyquaternium 10 -0.2%
    rice protein 0.2%
    fragrance 0.5%
    phenoxyethanol 0.6%
    water- balance

i am thinking that I should try to increase the sarcosinate to 12-14% (I will be trying this tomorrow).

i have tried to increase the guar gum but it still separated.

i am using Dehyquart GUAR N (Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) from BASF
Would being Cationic gum be the problem??

What is your opinion on cause of separation?
i cannot add any PEG’s to thicken or stabilize. If you could recommend something peg free and sulfate free that would solve the problem I would really appreciate any ideas or thoughts on this.

    kind Regards
    Jody

What does the separation look like?  Is it a thin layer at the top or thin layer at the bottom or something else?

There is nothing obvious to me but maybe the guar is separating out as it’s not hydrated well enough. But also, it doesn’t look like you have a solubilizer for the fragrance so that could be an issue too.

    Hi Perry,
thanks for commenting. The separation is about 1/4 clear yellowish on the top and white on the bottom 3/4.

I am going to do some more samples and mix the guar for at least 30mins before added other ingredients. I usually add citric acid to thicken the guar before adding the surfactants. I will also add some polysorbate 20 to try and solubilize the fragrance.

I will let you know how it goes.
