Shampoo Preservation Help
Hello, I’m in the process of submitting some samples for PET and Stability testing. I’ve conducted some tests in-house and feel like I’m on the clear here. But would love to hear from the group if you feel that the preservation in this formula is strong? (formula Below)
I had one sample in which I was at .8% Optiphen Plus and .15 Sodium Phytate that developed Microbial growth after a month (rancid smell).. Thought it was odd. Upped the Optiphen Plus to 1% and sodium Phytate to .25%

I would think to be safe you should keep the pH below 5.0 since Sorbic acid doesn’t work particularly well above 5

I can bring the it down to 5! Anything else?
I could also go up on the optiphen plus slightly to be safe?
In the past I’ve used tetrasodium glutamate diacetate as a chelating agent but it really messed with the viscosity in this formula, so I brought in sodium phytate to replace it, I know it’s not as effective, but I would imagine that with the optiphen at 1% and sodium phytate at .25% I’m good?

Incremental change will not buy much. Why can’t you use CMIT and EDTA?

Please Phil. Phenoxy and cap glycol are not natural , commercial sorbate is synthetic and formula 95%+ synthetic.
To your question - the levels you had should have worked and incremental increases are unlikely to make a difference. Please track down why you had apparent contamination - poor water quality, contaminated raw material, failed making hygiene, something.

Ya, I wanted to have some extra eyes on the formula to make sure I wasn’t missing anything there. I’m trying to recreate the problem, and trying to get to the bottom of what happened in the process for it to get contaminated. Thanks for your help
