  • Shampoo is turning hazy

    Hi All,

Happy holidays!  I enjoy very much reading this forum and I recall reading a post related to this, but can’t seem to find it anymore.
I have a shampoo formula that is crystal clear at 25c, but as soon as it’s exposed to lower temperature, let’s say 18-20c, it starts getting cloudy. Over the course of a couple of days, the shampoo remains cloudy even at 25c.

I believe this is related to the cloud point of the surfactants in the formula. I have sodium cocoyl isethionate and cocamidopropyl betaine as my only surfactants. In order to solve this issue, I would like some help in understanding what’s happening in my formula.

    Cheers!

Solubility drops on cooling and insoluble matter initially shows as cloudiness.

So yes, it looks like you have reached your cloud point.

You’ll need to dilute your formula, first by 25%, then 50% and so on until it no longer becomes cloudy on cooling.

SCI is not suited to clear formulations due to the behaviour you have seen. Try swapping it for sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate.

OR just adjust the ratio of CAPB to SCI to a higher level of CAPB. CAPB is a mild hydrotrope while SCI is not, especially if your pH is below 7.0.
