  • Shampoo gets Colored after adding fragrance

Posted by salman_hiksal on July 22, 2024 at 9:16 am

    Hello Everyone,

I am new to formulation. Need your help regarding my shampoo when i add coconut fragrance(fragrance color is Brownish Red) only at 0.2%, it colors changes to pink after 24-48 hours. Also when i add more upto 0.25%, it lowers the viscosity of the shampoo. How to counter this color changing property.

    My formula contains

    1. SLES 9%

    2. Methyl Paraben Sodium 0.2%

    3. Propyl Paraben Sodium 0.1%

    4. Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate 3%

    5. PQ-7 2.5%

    6. CDEA 3.5% (premixed with fragrance 0.2%, Almond Oil 0.2% and Vitamin E 0.5%)

    7. D-Panthenol 0.5%

    8. PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate 1.5%

    9. Glycerin 3%

    10. BrB 1018 1.5%

    11. Phenoxyethanol 0.8%

    12. Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein 0.5%

    13. CAPB 10%

    14. Pearliser liquid 3% (even tried 5%, same results)

    15. Citric acid 0.16% (to achieve ph at 6)

This is happening due to cationization effect which may arise due to PQ7. Try reducing your preservatives % as well. Either go with PP & MP together or Phenoxyethanol alone.

By the way how do you dissolve PEG 150 and how much time does it take to completely homogenize?

Does your fragrance smell a bit like vanila? There might be an oxidation going on. You could add an antioxidant (BHT or Tinogard TL).
