I seem to be getting everyone annoyed by asking for a shampoo formula. The only reason I asked was because I have a formula that has taken me 5 years to get to this point and it is still slightly irritating to my skin and hair is not as soft as I’d like. I decided to make my own as I’m sick of every batch of shampoo I buy feels different on my hair. If anyone would like to help I would be grateful, if not don’t worry. The formula I have is this,
80ml water
20ml 28% sles
2 ml coco betaine
0.005 poliquat 7
0.5 coco dea -
Also just to add, my name is Melanie. I accidentally used Joseph as I thought the user name was being used for something else. I’m just someone who has no clue about chemistry but just want tp make my own personal use shampoo. It’s already taken me 5 years to get to this point as i have no idea what im doing and could have used some help.. no shampoo I buy is leaving my hair feeling light and clean

Usually most chemists sell Shampoo formulations. Is don’t expect them to give you the best they can for free. But thanks to all of them, they help each other here if they have any problem in their formulas for free.
In your formula if you increase pq7 to 2ml it will solve some of your problems. But if you want me to give you the best formula that i can make, i will not do that for free.

@Joseph141 Sorry if I sounded rude, it wasn’t intentionalAs @Abdullah suggested, increase the PQ7 a little and… add a blend of preservatives to your formulation (1% maybe?). As much as it’s for personal use, it is important to preserve the system so that microorganisms don’t grow (they can often cause damage and allergies and so much more)

Let us know what ingredients you have on hand and we can put something together.
If you are getting irritation, I would stay away from Sulfates - Even tho SLES is ethoxylated, I would simply choose some milder surfactant (maybe personal preference). -
I have decyl glucoside, coco glucoside and sls as well as the ones already listed although I have always used a sulphate shampoo and had no problems before but they keep changing the ingredients on the shampoos in the shops so I’d now rather just make my own if possible, thanks paprik

Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate
sodium Cocoyl Glutamate
Decyl, Lauryl glucoside, etc,
those are some mild surfactants that are good at cleansing. (Available at Formulator sample shop or making cosmetics)
Add the blend maybe at 30%-40%? (Depending how clean you want your hair)Don’t just add 1 surfactant, make your own mix or buy some blend like the extra mild iselux extra mild. The more blend, the milder… (makeyourown.buzz)
Add some quats: Polyquat 7 at 2% or Guarcat at 0.4% (FSS or Lotioncrafter or Making Cosmetics)Add a very good reliable preservative unless you will be using this within literally a few days and stored in the fridge. Little living things feeding off your product and depositing into your hair/ skin is not what you want.Add some water soluble Dimethicone (amodimethicone)if you don’t mind the “cone” to make hair softer and easier to comb. (Making cosmetics).The more research you do on your own the more you will learn.

Hi coco, thanks for your help.. when you say blend at 30/40% do you mean e.g 30ml of surfactant blend in say 70ml water?

If you have a corporate domain, you can subscribe to several professional magazines that publish suppliers’ generic formulas. Most known are:

https://www.cosmeticsandtoiletries.com/You can also create an account with several large suppliers to get access to their example formulae. Not like those are perfect, but at least a starting point and free. Ulprospector and Seppic won’t let you get registered unless you can prove you are in the industry and part of an active business. Others don’t ask questions unless you would try to get a free sample (so my advice is don’t ask, just use their websites for info).
I haven’t tried to get an account with Stepan (I am not too much into surfs), but this is probably the one you want to consider.

Croda and BASF will let you register as long as you have a corporate domain.
Dow is the best. All info is in open access. One doesn’t even need an account to access their formulae.
