    Dear Formulators,

    I have a problem while making my biphase hair tonic formulation at home. After adding 4% herbal extract to the tonic, some small brown particles form at the bottom of the bottle after a week. And these particles easily disperse when I shake the solution.

    I would be grateful if anyone with experience in this matter could provide information on these particles and their potential impact on the stability and efficacy of the formulation.

    My formulation below:

    Water phase:

    2% propylene glycol

    4% herbal extract

    2% capixyl

    2% anagain

    0,5% panthenol

    0,5% caffeine

    Oil phase:

    0.5% pumpkin seed oil

    0,2% tocopherol

    You’re trying to mix water and oil without an emulsifier. That’s usually a problem.

      Is this normally a problem with the biphase formula, or was my extract contaminated? Would you give a more detailed explanation, or suggest some documents I should read?

      Do you have any preservative? If I were you I would start by making 4 solutions (with preservative):

      - 4% herbal extract in water

      - 2% capixyl in water

      - 2% anagain in water

      - the combination of all 3

      I would let those sit for a week and observe if you see any of the particles. That might at least tell you where the particles are coming from (or where it’s not). As far as what they will do to your formula, only stability testing can say for sure. Your bi-phase product is already “shake before use” so this might not be a huge issue aesthetically. But if the particles are not able to be dissolved in water again at some point during use then whatever the sediment is, it’s not as available to help with your product’s ‘performance’.
