  • Safety of kaolin clay

    Hello everyone,

My question is regarding the safety of Kaolin clay (CAS#1332-58-7) as a face
mask. The clay will be in powder form and water will be introduced only when applying
to face or body. Should the clay be heat treated to kill off any microbes, if
so at what temperature? Will the heat change the composition of the clay?

The kaolin clay shows that it contains crystalline silica
    and titanium dioxide, are they
harmful if absorbed by the skin or inhaled in small amounts.

    Thank you

It’s safe and if you are pre-mixing it immediately before use, you really do not have to be concerned with microbial contamination.  The silica and titanium dioxide are anticaking/flow agents included in small amounts … no worries there either.

Check with the manufacturer to see what preprocessing they have done in making the product … perhaps it has already been heat treated.

    Thank you.

I spoke to the manufacturer and he said that the kaolin is
removed from the ground, washed and crushed into powder. I asked if the clay
can be used in cosmetics. He was not sure and said they sell the kaolin to the pottery
and paper markets . Can this kaolin clay
be used in cosmetics as it has the same CSA#1332-58-7?

Thanking you in advanced for your help.

Why do you not just purchase it from a cosmetics ingredients supplier who will have screened the product to ensure it is cosmetic grade.

The SDS and material sheet states that the cosmetic grade and the
pottery kaolin is the same. The only difference is that the cosmetic grade clay price is way more
    expensive.
