  • Question about using Aloe Vera Juice instead of water in a body cream

    Hi,
I am making a muscle relief cream with broad spectrum hemp  CBD oil. I want to keep it as natural as possible.
    My ingredients are:
Grapeseed oil ( vitus Vinifera)  4 oz
    Beeswax  (cera alba) .5 oz
Shea Butter (vitellaria paradoxa) 5 oz
    Broad Spectrum Hemp CBD oil
Essential oils: camphor oil, peppermint oil, menthol, Eucalyptus oil, Tea Tree, Arnica oil, Vitamin E
After I heat the oils and wax, I blend aloe vera juice, sodium borate, and vegetable glycerin to the above and use an immersion blender.
My question is can I keep using the Aloe Vera Juice or will it have to be refrigerated?  Can you suggest a preservative I should be adding and/or a substitute for the aloe Vera juice?

Do you really need to add water or aloe vera juice? A (possibly whipped) body butter would be much easier to make, no issues with preservation to figure out. If you really wanted to incorporate a water phase you’ll also need an emulsifier which is difficult to do very naturally.

    @Agate
Thank you for your response.  So then you’re suggesting just blend the oils with the Vegetable glycerine and sodium borate? I probably won’t need the sodium borate either?

Just don’t expect any actual effect.

Glycerin is water soluble, if you add it to oils it will separate. And yes, don’t expect any effect.

Aloe vera juice is not a preservative neither vit E, the later is just to keep your oil and butter blend from rancidity, single phase is better, you will face some complexity in multiple phase

    Hi @@LisaC66
Sounds like a nice/traditional formulation with beeswax and sodium borate.

I am not sure where you are located but in the EU sodium borate is prohibited from use in cosmetics COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2019/1966.

I thought I would mention just in case you are planning to sell and you are in the EU.  :)

@dr sara  Thank you   As of now just in the US but if we were ship to EU that is good to know.  Is there a substitute you would recommend?

Glad I could help. :) The beeswax-borax combination is a very old way to make emulsions. I would recommend you make a beeswax cream using an emulsifier. Which emulsifier really depends on what oils are in your recipes.

If you ship to the EU you will need to meet the EU legal requirements. For cream you will need to have a Preservative Efficacy Test (PET).  You might want to limit your aloe vera juice. Any biomaterial that the little micro-organisms find tasty, may increase their growth.

You will also need an EU based Responsible Person, Product Information File (PIF), a Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) written by a safety assessor (I am a safety assessor), and finally, you need to list your product on the Cosmetic Product Notification Portal (CPNP).

This all sounds like a lot but it is not that difficult once you have developed your products. I work for a company that helps beekeepers and small producers sell their products legally in the EU.
    Kind regards,
    Dr Sara
