Propylene Glycol in a shampoo bar (heh?)
Posted by Margaret on November 22, 2024 at 12:17 pmSyndopour 200 MB melt & pour syndet bar base
What the heck does the propylene glycol do in this syndet base (OTHER than act as a humectant, which the glycerin would also do)????
Here is the ingredient list range, as given on the New Directions Aromatics web page:
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate 20-40%
Propylene Glycol 20-40%
Glyceryl Stearate 20-40%
Water 10-20%
Glycerin 10-20%

Having used it, I think that propylene glycol (with the glycerin) is what makes it function as melt and pour.
The end product is actually fairly brittle but soft enough that it wears/melts quickly in use. It doesn’t lather as voluminously as more complex made-from-scratch shampoo bars do. But it is *very* easy to use, and can be used safely on hair without worry about pH correction or causing damage the way true soap can. Good for crafters who do melt and pour and want to add a shampoo bar without having to learn more or experiment with trying to make their own shampoo bars.

I figured the PG would NOT make any bubbles. I’m sure you’re right that it’s used as a solvent, instead of say, water, so the surfactant used (SCI) can be pourable. Thanks for your response.

Even though it might help in processability (although the very use of excessive glycols softens the product forcing them to add glyceryl stearate), PPG and Glycerin will impair the product’s perormance, especially foam (flash foam is fundamental, especially if it’s a SH bar).

Looks like the PG is just used as a solvent to make it pourable. I didn’t think it would do anything in the way of cleaning. Thanks for your response!

I’m against the use of PG for a few reasons, the amount of ASM is too low, you would ideally use well over 60% powder surfactant. You can still “melt and pour”, it would be more like a thick paste but will form nicely in a silicone mold. I like that its simple but it can actually be simpler without the use of sooo much PG, I’ve never seen an atrocity like that lol. The melt n pour syndet bar I created recently using only a few ingredients, mostly plant based and “natural” for what it’s worth contained nothing that didn’t clean hair with the exception of 2 ingredients.

I got a sample of the Syndopour 200 product. It is CRAPPY! My spouse-man and I used it 3 nights in a row, on 1/2 of our heads. The OTHER half of our heads got a real shampoo bar with NO propylene glycol or glycerine in it.
The Syndopour 200 left a slightly slick/waxy feel to the hairs, as if the hairs were coated in something, hard to describe but NOT a positive experience.
