  • Preservative with same INCI but different supplier.

    Hi guys, I really want to know your opinion about picking a preservative for my bodywash, shampoo, and other rinse-off product.

    Currently, I’m using kemidant L plus (DMDM hydantoin + iodopropynyl butyl carbamate). I’m thinking to try using MCI system, as it is cheaper in my region here. However, I’m confused as below:

    1. The only available MCI system here is, Kathon LXE, and Kathon WT. Both inci is the same, while people mostly says that for cosmetic it should be using Kathon CG.
    Do you think it’s fine to use Kathon LXE for my rinse-off product. In the brochures, mostly it’s written to be use for latex mixing, but again the INCI is the same, and the function is the same, which is to prevent bacteria and fungi.

    2. I’m thinking of making my own preservative blend, because many small suppliers here only sell phenoxyethanol as single product. I believe this is only for bacteria, and needed to be mix with other fungi preservative.

    Do you think making my own preservative blend is a good idea?
    Do you have any recommendation of fungicidal preservative that works well with phenoxyethanol? (I’m thinking of potassium sorbate).

    Thank you guys so much!

    Kathons come in several grades and diverse % of active ingredients. Technical grades may contain higher amounts of (possibly harmful) unknown/undisclosed additives, side-products, or impurities. Check out the SDS; certain Kathons contain high levels of salts such as copper nitrate, just to give an example.

    @Pharma Thank you. I just know now that it possibly contain undisclosed additives, or impurities. I’ll be more selective and careful since many small suppliers won’t provide me with any data…

    To Pharma’s point, if Kathon, only use Kathon CG.
    You might check with Thor’s Microcare line of isothiazolinones.

    You can add preservatives individually, but making your preservative blend is not a good idea.

    @PhilGeis
    Thank you. I don’t mean to make a blend of preservative and store it. I explained it wrong, sorry.
    What i meant is, instead of using a broad spectrum preservatives from some company (like optiphen, germal plus, and other) which is expensive and hard to source it in my region, I’m thinking of using singular preservatives such phenoxyethanol for bactericidal, and then also using potassium sorbate for the fungicidal, hoping it will be broad spectrum enough.

    Do you think there will be incompatibility with this approach?

    I’m with you.  Adding preservatuve individually is my preference with caution that some are a bear to get in that way (e.g. IPBC).
    Certainly recommend Na benzoate over K sorbate in this context - and with EDTA.
