    Hello all,
I wonder if replacing  a preservative in a formula that was given by a supplier is advisable or not?
The formula that I got from my supplier is suitable for hair shampoo and bathing liquid soap, it contains Phenoxyethanol 0.5% and marketing wise I was asked to replace Phenoxyethanol with food grade preservative such as Sodium Benzoate or Potassium Sorbate 0.5%. All comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.
    Thank You…

There shouldn’t be a problem in replacing one preservative with another but ensure that you test for its effectiveness after doing this.

Another thing you ought to bear in mind is that formulations provided by ingredient suppliers are offered to showcase their products and they may not be the optimum in their performance or economics.

what’s the pH? if it’s over 6, potassium sorbate is completely ineffective; if it’s over 5, sodium benzoate is completely ineffective

personally I wouldn’t put phenoxyethanol in a shampoo, because there are plenty of preservatives that are more miscible and less likely to interfere with the foam

Johnb, thanks a lot, no wonder the supplier couldn’t answer my question.

    Bill_Toge, the pH is 5-6.5
Any suggestions for a preservative that less likely to interfere with the foam?

You can keep your product pH near above - 5 & use sodium benzoate & Potassium Sorbate,

I am following these and it is very effective.

You need to check the Preservative Efficacy Test, if it is passing, no issue you can use it.

DMDM Hydantoin also you can try.
