  • Preservative for an O/W emulsion with 20% of Kaolin clay

    Hi All,

I formulated face gommage (gentle scrub) with a high content of clay. This is a O/W emulsion and I am concerned about preservative. As far as I know it is difficult to preserve clay. I can not decrease it’s amount, because it’s a buffer scrub and it suppose to peel off, so I need quite a lot of clay. Currently I preserve it with Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin, but I suspect it’s not enough. Would parabens be more effective, or I should use a combination of parabens and Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin?

    Aqua 59.80%
    Cetearyl alcohol and PEG-20
    Stearate
    8.00%
    Fractionated coconut oil 6.00%
    Cetyl Alcohol 5.00%
    Tocopherol 0.20%
    Kaolin Clay 20.00%
    Phenoxyethanol &
    Ethylhexylglycerin
    1.00%
    Jojoba beads qs

    Thank you in advance!

@ngarayeva001 parabens will be sure cause already i see industriel clay using as preservative parabens . however i will try to make it with cathon CG cause i find it more secure.

Thank you @Fekher. The suppliers from which I order unfortunately do not have it. I will try my blend of parabens and phenoxyethanol together and hope for the best. I guess I finally have to order microbial kit for this… The benchmark product is preserved with parabens.

you are welcome @ngarayeva001 and this is a good new  for you.
So as conclusion  you can use a blend in % between 0,4 and 0,7 to preserve your emulsion.

Wow!!! That’s a strong one! I have a blend of Methylparaben and Propylparaben. Will add phenoxyethanol and hope it would work. But I will definitely try to find it. It looks like it can kill anything :)

Thank you @Fekher I found it. It’s sold under commercial name phenonip on lotioncrafter.
